The Essex Junction Fire Department is an all-hazards, paid-on-call department protecting a 4.6 square mile city, every hour of every day. Our members work full time as teachers, electricians, nurses, carpenters, engineers, and more, then answer the calls when their neighbors need help.
We started as a bucket brigade and bought our first chemical engine in 1895 for $750. In 1909 our first alarm box went into service, a rope tied to the striker on the Congregational Church so any resident could break the glass and pull hard to sound the alarm.

In 1962 a tank truck carrying 3,000 gallons of vinyl acetate overturned and burned on Park Street, which the NFPA called the first fire of its kind in the country. In 1984 our crews answered the Amtrak derailment in Williston, putting 35 members through 559 hours of rescue work and earning national recognition. In 2006 the station was dedicated to Assistant Chief Ernie Martin, who gave 65 years of service to this department.

FIRE SUPPRESSION
Structural and vehicle fire attack from two engines and a 105-foot aerial, backed by 1,500 GPM pumps and a full complement of hose, ground ladders, and SCBA.
ADVANCED EMS FIRST RESPONSE
AED-equipped apparatus and trained responders reach medical emergencies fast, delivering advanced life support care until the ambulance arrives.
RESCUE & EXTRICATION
Hydraulic tools, stabilization gear, and rescue training to free people trapped in crashes across the city and the surrounding corridors.
HAZARDOUS MATERIALS RESPONSE
Trained response and coordination for chemical, fuel, and hazardous material incidents, protecting the community and the environment.
