At 1126 hrs on Wednesday, May 13th, the Essex Junction and Essex Fire Departments were requested to respond with Essex Rescue and Police to the area of 151 Brigham Hill Road in Essex for a one vehicle crash with one patient pinned in the vehicle.

Utility 61 and Engine 5 responded with a total of four personnel and arrived on the scene with Essex firefighters to find the vehicle on its side resting against a tree with the driver pinned inside the vehicle. Members immediately went to work stabilizing the overturned vehicle and began the process of "flapping the roof" in order to gain access to the patient. Upon completion of this, personnel were able to access the patient to begin patient care while others worked on removing the victim's feet which were pinned between the seat and the steering wheel. Utilizing a come-a-long to pull the steering wheel off the victim, the personnel were able to free the trapped occupant in roughly 30 minutes.

The patient was transported to UVMMC by Essex Rescue and Essex Police are investigating the cause of the crash.
